Be Intentional.

  1. Provide information for your guests about the environmentally friendly practices at your event. Make this education memorable for your guests. Consider outlining all the green efforts of your event on plant or seeded paper. Aim to inspire others to join your green movement.

  2. Utilize signage for compost and recycling directions and communicate which products can be recycled and composed to ensure that they make it into the correct bins. Go digital or use recyclable material for signage.

  3. Reduce paper use and printing *see Invitations for alternatives

  4. Reuse of banners, signage, badge holders, and lanyards *Bonus: shipping less can often save thousands of dollars

  5. Join forces with the event planner hired for an event with an event date within days of your event at the same property. You can do this by inquiring with your event network to compare calendars. Strategize elements that can be re-used and shared between couples or for corporate and non profit clients, significantly reducing the eventsโ€™ footprint. Then inquire with your preferred rental company about implementing strategic drop off and pick up of product for the two events with overlapping event orders at the same venue or the same neighborhood to reduce fossil fuels from extraneous trips to same location. There is an obvious eco advantage but there is also ease and reduced cost involved with this approach.

  6. Re-think the Swag bag: I still love a good swag bag! But research, creativity and big data can allow us to really tap into what experience based takeaway our target audience would value most. Consider the packaging and material of any give-aways at the event. Additionally, if you insist on a swag bag, make sure the bag itself is derived from recyclable materials or at the least, chose a reusable bag.

  7. Re-think Favors: Consider how the materials they are made from, the production of them and disposal of them all impact the environment.

  8. Biodegradable glitter - Traditional glitter is petroleum based and thus very harmful for our environment. Buy it at Package Free Shop.

  9. Stop Using Balloons unless they are sourced and disposed of properly. Learn more here.

  10. Look to items you already own and consider re-purposing them or upcylcing them to incorporate as event decor and centerpieces at your event. See my example in Repurposing + Upcycling.

Make Memories

  • Focus on building an environment that encourages the moments that become ingrained in our memories, such as the experience, the music, the destination, expressions of the heart via speeches and keynotes, or the coming together of a community.

  • If you are thoughtful about waste and consumables and make them as green as possible, you will feel really good about the creativity and deliberation that entails.

  • Be part of the creative process yourself. The memory of planning for a special event can be just as cherished as the event itself.
